Windows XP Support Ended

XP_end of support

As of April 8th 2014 Microsoft no longer be support Windows XP, Office 2003 and Windows Server 2003. So what does this mean to you is the question we often hear asked?

In short the decision by Microsoft means no more Security or Stability updates will be made for XP, which you would normally receive automatically every month via Windows Update.

This means that going forward, the only thing protecting a Windows XP machine from Hackers and Viruses will be your Internet Security or Anti-Virus package. Over time it is likely that even the best of these packages will no longer be able to hold back the weight of any newly developed attacks.

What to do next?

Owners of a Windows XP computer that is connected to the Internet should consider the following options:-

  1. Retire your old computer and move to either a New or Quality refurbished machine running Windows 7, 8 or 10
  2. (No longer recommended) Anyone choosing to stick with XP should consider upgrading to the best Internet Security product suitable and perform an external backup often.

If your computer is never connected internet and does not have files transferred to it using a USB Stick it will be possible to continue using the machine in relative safety.

If you are not sure what to do next, talk to any trusted supplier of genuine computer products and tell them what machine you have, how you use the computer and let the supplier talk you through the options available to you.

What NOT to do

  1. Beware offers of “Free or Cheap” upgrades to Windows 7 or 8 software, you may be getting a hacked copy of Microsoft Windows which will leave you vulnerable to viruses and identity theft.
  2. If in doubt, ask for proof! Any genuine copy of windows will include a licence key sticker for your computer.
  3. Avoid doing nothing, if you cannot afford to change then be sure to backup all your data and photos on an external hard drive or USB Stick
